Introduction
The K2K precinct, spanning the town centres of Kensington and Kingsford in Sydney, is undergoing major change with the introduction of light rail and is under significant pressure for growth.
The K2K Urban Design Competition seeks to activate new light rail stations as activity hubs and consider the potential effects of change on the existing suburbs. The winner of this competition is JMD with Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects. It proposes an approach to density that aligns the concentration of height to direct public benefit, with a proposed mix of low, medium and high-rise development, representing a bold, yet carefully argued investment in the public domain and civic fabric of the Kensington to Kingsford urban corridor.
Winning Design
“The overall strength of the proposal by JMD and Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects rests in its overarching commitment to city-making: from the large-scale transformation of the extant landscape and its topography, down to its fine grain detail at the human scale.”
