Introduction
Within walking distance of Surfers Paradise, the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct will establish the Gold Coast as a place for the convergence of culture, art and design online, real-time and mobile networks.
Assisting the Gold Coast City Council to procure innovative proposals for the precinct, the design competition seeks a composition of an unforgettable outdoor art-scape that allows for accessible connections to the surrounding locality, a distinctive New Arts Museum and a Living Arts Centre to allow for the development of local talent and deliver excellence in a diverse array of performing arts and cinema. The winner of this competition is Ashton Raggatt McDougall (ARM). Their proposal eschews rigid architectural geometries and conventional landscape hierarchies (exemplified in the classical garden), generating a masterplan that organises the site’s elements as a web of connections across the entire Cultural Precinct. The proposal is a bold and inclusive reimagining of what a cultural precinct might be, seeking to engage the widest possible demographic. From skateboarding to opera and from contemporary art to fashion catwalks, the precinct design embraces the full diversity of Gold Coast and Queensland culture. The built outcome of the competition is the Home Of The Arts (HOTA).
Winning Design
“The thematic overlay of an extended honeycomb carapace that stretches across the site as a replicating modular system can accommodate a changing brief and staged delivery, while maintaining a consistent architectural language. It has the possibility to suggest a new ‘world’ – with qualities of a ruin within wonderful tropical gardens.”
