Introduction
Working with Auckland Waterfront Development Agency (AWDA), the Waterfront Auckland Design Competition gathers concept designs for a new hotel situated within New Zealand’s largest urban renewal project, Wynyard Quarter in downtown Auckland.
Occupying a signature block on the Viaduct Harbour Edge, the project realises the potential of the site without competing with the neighbouring iconic buildings, the Viaduct Events Centre and the ASB Headquarters.
The winner of this competition is Fearon Hay and Peddle Thorp. Their proposal adds significantly to the quality of the entrance experience to Wynyard Quarter from Te Wero Island and the look and feel of the Jellicoe St spine.
Winning Design
“The proposal has clarity and directness, from its initial concept to material selection, architectural language and spatial logic. The playful transposing of boatshed rooflines onto the new building volume is formally inventive and functional.”
